Differentiating Pastel Media from Pastel Colours
It is often confusing to understand whether pastel has been used in the context of the colour palette, or the medium of paint. Here is a snapshot for easy reference:
- Pastel Paints: Primarily powdered colour pigments bound with gum or resin, they are available in hard chalk, soft or oil crayons, and pencil form. Artist quality pastels are relatively expensive and contain a higher pigmentation ratio, making the colours strong, bold and fade resistant. Student quality pastels are cheaper, but due to lower pigmentation, the colours are also slightly less intense. There is no limit to the number of shades you can find in pastels. Renowned artists such as Jean Baptiste Chardin and Edgar Degas have created oil pastel masterpieces in the late 17th and 18th centuries.
- Pastel Shades: These are usually tints or hues created by adding white to a darker shade. Colours such as baby pink, powder blue, peach, sea green or mauve, are all examples of pastel shades. This is usually considered to be a feminine, delicate and clean palette.
