Digital Detox: Creative Ways to Wean Your Kids off Electronics

Are you worried about an overdose of the digital diet that you are feeding yourselves as well as your kids? Do you feel guilty about handing your child a mobile phone or tablet or turning on a YouTube channel, just to keep them busy while you attend to your daily chores? While that may be an occasional option, it does not have to become routine. There are several other creative ways to keep your kids entertained and wean them off electronics:

  • Create a Home Library: Inculcate the reading habit in your children from an early age. However, instead of kindles or laptops, create a dedicated space for a home library filled with books. After all, there is nothing quite as intoxicating as the scent of a new book. To make it more fun, get your child to organise the books with fun stickers, numbers, labels and book covers. They can even put together a creative notebook with an index of the book titles and what they have finished reading, or perhaps even loaned to their friends. Designate specific days or time for the library to ensure that your child does justice to this special corner that you create.
  • Make an Arts and Crafts Station: There are several art and craft items that you could stock up to create a permanent creative station within your home. In addition to chalks, paints, craft sticks, activity books, and other such items, include some household items in a craft crate. Add toilet paper rolls, newspapers, empty cereal boxes, aluminium foil, skewers, and other such things to let your child indulge in creative projects using these articles.
  • Spend Time Outdoors: There’s nothing quite like breathing in fresh air, rolling in the mud, playing a sport or generally hanging out in the park or your backyard.
  • Let them Think Outside the Box: Being outdoors may be weather dependant, but another reliable trick is to let your kids choose their own digital detox. Get them to make a list of all the activities that they think are cooler than watching TV, browsing videos, or surfing the internet. Then just try to honour their choices as much as possible, as long as those are healthy and feasible options.
