The Evolution of Stenciling
A Neanderthal cave art found in Spain has evidence of stenciling in the form of hand prints that dates back to the pre-historic age, and is believed to be almost 37,000 years old. Some caves in Fiji also show evidence of stenciling which is believed to have been done by pressing vegetable dyes through holes or patterns made in banana leaves or bamboo leaves. Several drawings and intricate art found in Egyptian tombs or along the walls of Pompeii city also seem to be done through stenciling.
The first paper-based stencil was created by the Chinese in 105 AD, and used in furthering their printing techniques, especially to reproduce the same pattern repeatedly over a larger surface. A few years later, the Japanese improvised stenciling by tying together delicate stencils with human hair or silk. This was used in dyeing fabrics, also known as Katazome. Eventually, stenciling spread to Europe and this technique became quite popular in mass produced items, including book illustrations, fabrics, wallpaper, and even in architectural designs. With today’s technology and options such as laser-based cutting, the possibilities of designs or patterns that can be created on stencils are limitless.
